Meeting regarding U15/16 for season 2010/11
I was present at a meeting of clubs in Elgin recently, where we discussed a plan for next season. All clubs are in a similar situation to us at Garioch, in that we are having to play a combined 15/16 side to get a game. Only three clubs felt they were able to produce a side at under 15 level on its own. As we all know, retaining players in the 15-18 age bracket is, has been and always will be a problem area. There are too many other attractions, from weekend jobs and girls to simply hanging with their pals. Some even study for exams!!
At Garioch Rugby Club, we are committed to ensuring that we run a full coaching programme for all age groups from micro and mini rugby, right through to old codgers. To that end, we have continued our investment in a Rugby Development Officer, with Chris Lawson carrying on his good work into next season. We have also secured funding for a coach dedicated to the 15/16 age group (1995 and 1996 year birth dates), and have a young Zimbabwean player Andy Lane getting to know the ropes at the club under Chris's guidance.
So Garioch are committed to taking rugby forward at all age groups. What we need now is a similar commitment from players and parents. To run a squad effectively we need volunteers to take on small roles. The more volunteers, the less to do.
We will be holding a meeting at the clubhouse next Wednesday, 28 April 2010, starting at 7pm. To be a success, ideally I would like ALL parents of member boys, AND the boys themselves there, so we can thrash out any problems, perceived or otherwise, that you feel there are with the set-up, and find solutions together.
Thanks, and look forward to seeing you next Wednesday.
