Garioch S2s win the Mackie 7s

Garioch's all conquering S2 squad picked up their first piece of Silverware on Sunday with Victory in the Mackie 7s.

Teams from as far afield as Dunfermline and Carnoustie along with squads from Grammar, Ellon, Mackie and Deeside competed in the annual 7s tournament at Redcloack on Sunday.

The Garioch squad comprised Liam Cousins, Finlay McPherson, Jordan McDonald, Adam Krascjuk, Calum Morrison, Douglas Park, Fergus Mckenzie, Blair Strachan, Sam Metcalf and Alex Knapperr.

Opening pool victories against Aberdeen  Grammar and the Mellonackie Reds meant Garioch topped their pool and went through the the semi final of the Shield where they met Mellonackie Reds.

Throughout the tournament Gariochs ability to secure possession through fierce tackling and poweful rucking put the opposition on the back-foot. The speed and fast handling of the backs created multiple scoring opportunities with Park, Morrison, Krasjuk and Cousins all crossing the line.

Mellonackie Blacks were brushed aside as Garioch reached the final without conceding a try.

In the final they would face the hugely poweful and unbeaten Dunfermline side. As in all their matches Garioch came out of the blocks the fastest and ran in four tries before half time. A fightback by Dunfermline at the start of the second half saw two quick tries which had the Garioch coaches and supporters biting their nails. the team composed themselves before working their way upfield and running in another two tries to ease the tension.

At the final whistle the players were elated. It was a fantastic achievement for a squad that has been playing together for nine years now.

The players were praised highly by many of the coaches and the tournament organisers.
