Player Identification Events

After each of the age group festivals are complete, there will be an event held at Garioch RFC, Kelland’s Park Inverurie where enthusiastic and motivated pupils will be selected to partake in contact sessions. It is anticipated that the participants will be motivated to continue travelling to the Kelland’s and join the club. We would like assistance from rugby champions to identify potential participants.

P4-7 After Schools Clubs (Contact Rugby)

Garioch RFC coaches will be holding contact after schools sessions at a number of different school venues to allow a wide range of children who are interested in playing rugby an easier transition to the club game. These after school sessions aim to teach the children the basics of contact rugby within a controlled environment and to act as a natural progression from the tag sessions they will receive during curriculum time. These sessions will run straight after schools for one hour and will be outside weather permitting, however TAG rugby will be taken if we are unable to do contact. These schools have been selected to hold after schools clubs to provide each network with a geographically accessible club, for as many different pupils as possible. GRFC will supply FREE gum shields to participants. Can Rugby Champions insure their after school club is promoted effectively to maximise our time.

Food Standard Agency Initiative (HEAPS Project)

Garioch RFC, Scottish Rugby Union and the FSA would like to offer, alongside schools coaching, a project aimed to promote the benefits of safe and healthy eating with regular participation in exercise. The initiative comprises of a six-week training course for boys and girls in primaries five and six. The food standards agency have stated that “using sports coaches as role models helps to motivate youngsters to take on and understand messages about safe and healthy eating along with fun activities”.

The pupils will complete a variety of healthy eating and food hygiene activities each week, from learning how to be healthy and get the right balance of foods to how to handle and store food hygienically and safely. This will be conducted during class room time by teachers using a mission book with various activities to complete each session.

However it is not all classroom-based. After completing the theory, children will step outside and join Garioch RFC development staff for a practical fun-based rugby session. During the session, the coaches will ask the pupils questions on activities in the pupil mission-book to test their knowledge and introduce new topics.

All pupils who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate along with some goodies, including a kit bag and fridge thermometer, while participating schools will receive some rugby equipment.

Selected schools will be approached during the year to participate in this program.

As the governing body for the sport, Scottish Rugby deems that player safety is paramount while ensuring the game remains fun and enjoyable for all involved.

The  “Are You Ready to Play Rugby?”  campaign was launched by Scottish Rugby at the start of 2009 to ensure that a consistent approach to player safety is adopted across Scotland by all coaches, teachers, referees and volunteers.
