Schools Coaching

Plan for 2009-10

This years plan for giving free rugby to the Community involves a >£30,000 package if we get all our funding together.  We have employed Chris Lawson as RDO to work full time throughout the year, plus Ev Donaghue as a part time Community Coach.  Therefore, assuming we can afford it, up until Christmas we will commit to 7 days a week coaching in the schools.

We will continue and increase the amount of Curriculum rugby to Kemnay and Meldrum academies, curriculum rugby to about 25 primary schools, coaching the Academies, assisting in the academy games, running after school clubs, festivals and tournaments.  We will also assist in Street Rugby when these events are organised.

Introduction

Season 2007 - 2008 saw a massive progression in Garioch RFCs Schools Coaching initiative. For the second successive year, Garioch RFC again provided coaching to 19 Primary schools and the 3 academies of Inverurie, Kemnay and Meldrum, only this time, we were able to provide this completely free of charge.

In term one and two, we provided 640hrs of coaching, in term 3 about 190hrs and in term 4 this equated to about 30 hrs per week. In all, we provided more than a full time teacher post for the schools.

For 2008 - 09, we provided  8 full days per week free coaching to the schools for terms 1 & 2, between Rob Donaghue, our full time RDO and our Community Coach, Ev Donaghue.

Once again, with the assistance of our sponsors, the SRU and now SPORTSMATCH, we are able to employ a full time RDO to primarily conduct schools coaching, but work on establishing the links between all the schools and the Club via after schools clubs, festivals, tournaments and rugby camps.

Sponsors Lawrence of Kemnay, (which has provided 2 x loan cars for our coaches), MI Swaco, Baker Oiltools, Protech Centreform, Alpha Plus, Ferguson Modular, IKM Testing and Tawse Tyres have all signed up to keep the project running. Schools Festivals

Our last inter-academy tournament was held on Friday 14th November between Meldrum, Kemnay and Westhill Academies. Meldrum won at all 3 levels of U15s, U18s and girls.  Inverurie Academy which won the trophy last year didn;t participate.

Our next Primary School tag rugby festival shall be held on Friday 7th November.

On October 9th 2007, Garioch RFC had hosted a World Cup Schools Rugby Festival for 150 children from six Inverurie primary schools.

On Friday 4th Nov 2008, we hosted a tag rugby festival primarily for P6 / P7s as part of our November is Try! Rugby Month where about 400 children played 80 games, with 10 running concurrently at the same time.

Congratulations to everyone who participated on the day and who played with great a great spirit of fair play.
