Secondary Schools

Curriculum Rugby

Garioch RFC will expose both male and female pupils to exciting, fun team based games during curriculum sessions, whilst teaching them the skills to participate in the Garioch Schools tournament at the end of the block of coaching. The sessions will be planned to progress through the basic skills and introduce contact within a safe controlled environment. The intent is to encourage pupils to get active and involved at Garioch RFC, thereby increasing numbers playing regular contact rugby at the Club.

Term 1 & 2

Inverurie, Meldrum, Kemnay and Alford Academies will receive 8 week block of curricular coaching progressing towards the Garioch Schools 10’s Tournament. The S1/2 age groups will be targeted over these terms with both girls and boys participating.

Term 3

Garioch RFC will deliver 8 week block of curricular contact rugby to S3/4 pupils to develop participation levels and interest in after schools rugby and in progression towards the Grampian Schools 7’s tournament. The S3/4 age groups will be targeted over these terms with both girls and boys participating.

Term 4

Girls Rugby sessions will be delivered across the 4 secondary schools to develop the girls section at the club. The club also supports the Grampian girl’s coordinator with events and pathways sessions. Recruit and develop an Garioch Girls Schools Squad.

After Schools Rugby

Garioch RFC will assist with the recruitment of coaches to aid after schools secondary programme and make available a community coach to help deliver after schools sessions. We continue to support the school rugby champions and referee school friendly, North Schools Cup and National Brewin Dolphin Bowl games.

Brewin Dolphin Schools Cup

Garioch RFC will select, through talent identification sessions, a Garioch Schools U18 Representative team to enter the national schools cup. The D.O. will manage the team and the club will supply coaching to facilitate the team’s success within the competition. The club will also supply team kit, strips, training/playing equipment and travel costs.

North Schools Cup

The D.O and Club community coaches will support the schools with after schools coaching and supply refereeing for games.

GariochSchools Cup- 10’s S1/2 School League

A Junior League – This will be held over the school term and include Inverurie, Kemnay, Meldrum, West Hill and Alford academies at S1/2 age groups. The League will be in school time and held at each school participating. The aim of the league is to introduce the competitive side of rugby and also encourage schools to build teams at the various age groups in particular S1. This tournament will show potential players what Garioch RFC can offer and encourage them to play rugby/participate at the club.

Grampian Schools 7’s Tournament

This tournament will look to develop all the basic skills of rugby with players having more time on the ball as the key factor in sevens is that, as the name cleverly suggests, there are only seven players in each team. This means more ground for each person to cover, but also more possession of the ball for each player.

There are just three people in a scrum and two or three in a lineout, whereas in the full game there can be up to eight players in each.

As a result, technical offences are less common and play is faster and freer flowing. In addition, set pieces are a lot simpler to understand, which is great if you can’t get your head around all those scrum laws!

With fewer players on the pitch, there is plenty of space for individuals to show off their skills. It is a game that really exploits the basics of rugby – running, passing, tackling and decision-making. To be successful you need speed, skill and stamina.

Garioch RFC will organise and run this event while facilitating 5 secondary schools in the Aberdeenshire area to enter and participate in the tournament. U16 & U18 age groups can enter this tournament.

Strength & Conditioning Project

Garioch RFC development officer will deliver after school strength and conditioning sessions over the year to S1/2 and S3/4 pupils who play school or club rugby. This project aims to combine the curriculum for excellence with Health Education Authority guidelines which recommends that young people engage in exercise that promotes muscular strength, flexibility and bone health twice weekly. Young people can meet the secondary guideline by participating in resistance exercise. Attending pupils will become confidant individuals by pursuing a healthy and active lifestyle and will look to achieve success in different areas of rugby union. With the use of training diary’s and by encouraging participates to design their own programmes we will incorporate and develop literacy/numeracy skills.

Coach Education

Youth Coaching Course

Garioch RFC development officer will deliver YCC in three secondary schools. The YCC is aimed at 15 – 19 year olds and is geared at supporting young people in a structured way to acquire the skills and confidence to lead and deliver rugby sessions at schools or clubs. This is achieved by offering a structured programme of 4 modules covering different elements of the role of a coach, practical coaching experience and concluding with a certificated Foundation rugby Coaching and Refereeing award. The course is delivered in a supported environment which encourages learning through questioning, group working, individual reflection practical experience, acquiring life skills and peer learning; so that the young person becomes a competent and confident youth coach. Following the course youth coaches go on to coach or lead sessions in school, the community and sports clubs.

Other Community Activities

Street rugby sessions

Street Rugby has been particularly challenging, and rewarding. This is the flexible non-contact version of rugby that is taken into neighbourhoods as advised by community safety partnerships (CSP’s) around Scotland, from Shetland to Dumfries. The aim is to offer rugby to a new audience and offer a diversionary activity to young people who might otherwise get involved in anti- social behaviour or worse. Garioch RFC will be conducting street rugby sessions around the Aberdeenshire area in partnership with Aberdeenshire council streets sports officers and Grampian Police.

Youth Work- Community learning

Garioch RFC coaches have been conducting sessions with the local community centre for S1 pupils. We are conducting a 6 week block of sessions, comprising 3 weeks of tag rugby sessions held at local community centre, followed with a 3 weeks of progressive contact sessions held at the club to create pathways for children who attend the community centre that wish to take up rugby.

ADP Project

The ADP project looks to engage children and young people, through diversionary activities, who are specifically at risk of engaging in reckless alcohol or drug use behaviours. The club will run rugby sessions in Kemnay targeting areas where these behaviours are elevated. Depending on funding allocations we are looking to expand this project around the local areas targeting Inverurie, Meldrum and Kemnay areas.

Special Needs & Learning Disabilities work

Garioch RFC is working in partnership with NAS (National Autistic Society) to deliver fun sessions to Autistic children in the local area. Furthermore, the club also has a strong link with St Andrews school Inverurie where we deliver a block of rugby to pupils with a wide range of abilities, additional support needs (ASN) and a diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD).
